Transportation networks are the arteries of economic and social life. When they function well, they are invisible. When they do not, the consequences are felt across every part of a community. Transportation infrastructure faces pressure from multiple directions simultaneously. Urban areas are growing faster than road networks are being expanded. Existing infrastructure is deteriorating. Road safety remains a serious and persistent challenge. And the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users are too often an afterthought in systems designed primarily around private vehicles. Effective transportation planning is about understanding how people actually live and move - and investing in infrastructure that serves everyone, not just those with the most convenient access to it.
